The garden apartment views were not the best when I lived in Delaware. Upon moving to the Philadelphia area, me and my partner were only looking at cost. We wanted cheap rent with more bang for the buck, in other words, we were trying to live frugal.

Neither of us didn’t stop to think about air quality, being around successful people or how our living situation would affect opportunity for growth. We went with what we were familiar with. We went for comfort. Moving from New Jersey to the Philadelphia / Delaware area isn’t really a big deal. It's only 1 hour and 30-45 minutes from point A to point B, but in reality it was a drastic shift from what we were used to.

According to an analysis done by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), Delaware ranked 20th among the worst states in the nation in regards to exposing their residence to toxic air pollution from coal filled power plants.  You potentially can move to Delaware feeling great and move out with asthma or other respiratory conditions as I mentioned in my webinar: How to Get Uncomfortable Right Now

After only one short year, I realized that this wasn’t the place for me and we quickly gathered our shit and headed off to a better place – an active, entrepreneurial, and abundant neighborhood in Philly. – Manayunk.

Now, this has me thinking: Why do we stay in places that blocks our growth, keeps us stuck and depressed? Why don’t we just change our environment and move the fuck on?

Money seems to play a major role in people staying in the same place. It baffles me that one would want to remain in a crime ridden, depressing, uninspiring, drab towns, neighborhoods and cities their entire lives – they call it home. A young mother once told me that she came home one night and had to quickly tell her son to get down to the floor because the sound of gun shots was blazing outside her windows. The way it sounded to me was this was something of normal occurrence. I asked her – Why don’t you get out of there. Move.

People won’t move because the rent is reasonable and family is there.  It’s easier to get to the babysitter’s house.  The job is close by and that’s all they know.  Familiarity kills.

How do you go about changing your views then? The first thing you have to do is change your idea of what success is.  Success is not living on a battlefield.  Success is not hanging on the corner.  Success is not settling for the cheapest rent in a subpar neighborhood.  Real success comes from stretching yourself and outgrowing your current space till a point it makes you sick because you want so much more that you cannot wait to get the hell out. This is success.

This is what I had to do to get the hell out of the air polluted, uninteresting, and drab garden apartments in Delaware.

·        I set my standards much higher. – I wanted to live in the best places not the cheapest places.

·        I scheduled multiple apartment viewings in places I knew I couldn’t afford

·        I started taking photos of their views.

·        I set a date.

·        When I went to tour new places and visit them, I dressed sharp.

·        I spoke to the leasing agents as if they already rented it to me.

·        More money set aside for this goal.

·        I visited the neighborhood frequently.

·        Negotiate the leasing terms.

·        Hand in a cover letter with the application.

My rent increase from the sunny garden apartments to Main Street – Manayunk was an increase of 41% and our recent increase from Main Street to our current place was 25% (not counting utilities and other expenses). At any point I will move again. I move with opportunity and remain nimble at all times.

Yes, there was a big increase. So what. There was also an increase in creativity, abundance, prosperity and success. I had to trade places and change my environment. Instantly, we made friends with movers and shakers. Instantly, our health was better and we became active. Instantly, my business sense got better. Instantly, my new views changed my views about personal development.

You can create similar results. You can change your views by changing your environment. Look around. If you aren’t growing, it probably means you aren’t moving. Stay motivated.

Remain uncomfortable,

Stacy
